Changes in 2009 Youth Baseball

The City of Pittsfield Recreation Program has been informed that the Pittsfield Minor League youth baseball program will not be operating this season. As a result, children aged 7 to 12 who had previously registered with the Minor League should look to the Pittsfield Little League as an option for the 2009 season.

Little League has extended their registration to accommodate players who have previously played for the Minor League; player registrations will be accepted until the second tryout. Parents can expect a full registration refund from the Minor League. Any questions regarding youth baseball and available options can be directed to Pittsfield’s Recreation Activities Coordinator, Rebecca Tefft, at 499-9370.

Little League registration and try out information is as follows.

Rookie Division Registration (ages 7-9):

Location: The CYC

South Little League Registration (ages 10-12):
Dates/Times:
Wednesday, April 1 6:00 - 8:00pm
Location: Holmes Rd Fire Station

North Little League Registration (ages 10-12):

Wednesday, April 1 6:00 - 8:00pm
Location: Pecks Rd Fire Station

West Little League Registration (ages 10-12):
Dates/Times:
Wednesday, April 1 5:00pm to 8:00pm
Location:  West Housatonic Street Firehouse

Tryout Dates:

South - April 4th 10:00am to 1:00pm and April 5 12:00 to 2:00pm at Deming Park.

West - April 4th & 5th  10:00am to 12:00pm at Taconic High School.

North - April 4th & 5th 12:00 to 2:00pm at Taconic High School.

Players need to dress warm and arrive early.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
