WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Join Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Senior Curator Richard Rand during the Thursday, April 9, Looking at Lunchtime Talk as he discusses Agnolo Bronzino's striking Portrait of a Man, on loan to the Clark from the Phillips Family Collection. Admission to the 12:30 pm gallery talk is free.
The elegant and arresting portraits of the Italian painter Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) won him the esteem of the intellectual elite of Florence during the sixteenth century, and his refined style earned him the position of court painter to Duke Cosimo I de' Medici between 1540 and 1555. While the identity of the painting's sitter is unknown, the picture can still be considered in light of the philosophies and styles that appealed to the Medici and in the context of other portraits of the Italian Renaissance in the Clark collection.
The series continues on Thursday, May 14, when Michael Cassin, director of the Center for Education in the Visual Arts, examines Francesco Guardi's San Giorgio Maggiore. The talks take place at 12:30 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (open daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May.
