Parade Committee Offers Float Building Workshop10:50AM / Wednesday, April 08, 2009
PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The Pittsfield 4th of July Parade Committee announced the 2009 Float Building Workshop will be held on Wednesday evening, April 22 at 7 pm at the Morningside School on Burbank Street in Pittsfield.
This year’s theme is Pittsfield on the Move. This workshop is designed to bring together potential float builders to learn the rules and regulations of putting together an award winning float for the 4th of July Parade.
Ideas will be offered on float construction, types of materials to use, size regulations, safety issues, and an understanding of the categories for your entry. Offers of free materials and the use of trailers will be available.
The Parade Committee strongly encourages participants to have someone from their committee attend this workshop to eliminate any problems that may arise the day of the parade. Refreshments will be served following the workshop. For more information please call the 413-447-7763.
The Pittsfield 4th of July Parade has an historic reputation dating back to 1824, when the procession consisted of Revolutionary War survivors, patriots, politicians, and horse-drawn carriages. The parade was held off and on by various citizen groups until 1947 when it was taken over by the Pittsfield Permanent Firemen's Association. Under the firemen, the parade grew in size and popularity but was discontinued in 1976.
In 1977 a small group of volunteer citizens obtained $2,000 seed money from the City of Pittsfield and held their first parade in 1978. Over the years, this independent, non-profit organization -- the Pittsfield 4th of July Parade Committee, Inc. -- has grown in size, spirit, and determination.
