NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - What is your Gimmick? For a prostitute it’s turning her next “trick” in order to survive. For the dream deferred junkie it’s trying to find his next fix. The Gimmick is wanting to change, but not having the courage to. It lurks in the shadows of the ghetto, the suburbs, and the pent house waiting to strangle dreams and hopes.
Set against the back drop of 1970s Harlem the play tells the story of a young girl named Alexis, who struggle to escape the brutality of street life through her love for language and words. Obie Award winner and Pulitzer Prize nominee Dael Olandersmith’s work is a raw explosion of rhapsodic language, stark realism, and memory. A reminder of the innocence and wisdom present within the eyes of a child.
