NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – North Adams SteepleCats general manger Sean McGrath announced on Wednesday afternoon that 2008 NECBL Top Pitcher Tim Boyce will be returning to North Adams to play for the SteepleCats in 2009.

Boyce had a breakout summer for the SteepleCats in 2008. He started nine games and went 7-1 with a 0.95 ERA. He struck out 65 batters in 57 innings of work, walked just 16, didn’t allow a single home run and held opponents to a miniscule .185 batting average. Boyce lead the league in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, and home runs allowed.  Boyce was also named the starting pitcher of the NECBL All-Star game.

Prior to his time in North Adams, Boyce had been used strictly as a reliever at the University of Rhode Island. As a sophomore in 2008, Boyce was a dominant force out of the Rams bullpen. That year he appeared in 18 games and went 4-1 with a 0.89 ERA, five saves, 36 strikeouts and six walks in 30.1 innings pitched. His ERA was a team-best, and he was tied for the team lead in saves. After the season he was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region Second Team as well as the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Second Team. He was also selected to play in the 2008 NEIBA All-Star game

As a freshman in 2007 Boyce appeared in 22 games out of the bullpen. He went 1-0 that season with a 5.35 ERA, six saves, 40 strikeouts, 14 walks, over 35.1 innings pitched. His six saves were a team high. For his efforts, he was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.

Following his breakout summer with the SteepleCats in 2008, Boyce made his way to the front of the Rams rotation this past spring. Going into the A-10 playoffs, Boyce has a record of 5-2 in 13 starts with one complete game. He’s struck out 59 batters and walked 27 in 69.2 innings of work.

Opening Day is right around the corner. The SteepleCats will open up their season on Friday, June 5, in New Hampshire to take on the Keene Swamp Bats. The SteepleCats play their home opener on Saturday, June 6 against the Danbury Westerners.  Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field, and the gates will open at 6:00 p.m.  For more information on the roster, schedule and other news, please visit www.steeplecats.com.
