PITTSFIELD, Mass. - On Thursday, May 28th Pontoosuc Lake will be chemically treated with an aquatic herbicide to control nuisance aquatic vegetation. The entire lake will be closed to all water uses (including swimming, fishing and boating) on the day of treatment. These uses may resume on Friday morning, May 29th.
Use of the lake water for irrigation (watering lawns, gardens or plants of any kind) is prohibited for 10 days post treatment. Use of the lake water for drinking and watering livestock (i.e., cattle, horses, etc.) is also prohibited for 10 days following the day of treatment. Pets or wildlife that may drink the lake water will not be harmed. The Friends of Pontoosuc will post notices around the lake shoreline in advance of treatment warning of these temporary water use restrictions.
Costs of this treatment are shared by the City of Pittsfield and the Town of Lanesborough. The treatment is part of the comprehensive plan for the management of Pontoosuc Lake developed by the Friends of Pontoosuc Lake, and supported by Pittsfield and Lanesborough.
The treatment has been approved by the conservation commissions of both municipalities as well as by the Mass DEP. A similar treatment was performed last year and was very successful. The work is being performed by the state licensed firm, Aquatic Control Technology, Inc., of Sutton MA. For information call 499-9344.
