PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Pittsfield’s Storefront Artist Project is presenting the “Art of Scott Hanna” this summer as part of its Comic Book and Cartoon Art Series that was so popular in 2008. Hanna is a well-known graphic novel and comic book illustrator, and his work on Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Robin, and others will be highlighted in the exhibition. The Art of Scott Hanna will be on view August 1 – 30, 2009, at the Storefront Artist Project, and a series of related free workshops and programs will also be offered to the community.

Scott has a long connection with Pittsfield. His wife, Pamela Ptak, grew up in Pittsfield and her family still lives there. This connection with Pittsfield has Scott excited about playing a role in the Storefront Artist Project’s summer exhibit and Kid-Centric, Family-Friendly programming, sponsored by Berkshire Bank.

With a career spanning over two decades, Hanna is a legend in the world of comic book art. His career began in 1987 with Eternity comics where he worked as a penciller and inker. By 1988 he was working at DC comics and soon after was working at Marvel as well. In 1991, Hanna began a five year association with Batman, inking Detective Comics and every other Batman title during that time. Hanna began a 15 year stint with Spider-Man in 1993, again inking almost every Spider-Man title, most notably working with penciller John Romita Jr. on Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker Spider-Man for a run of 10 years. Hanna is currently the artist on Dark Reign Hawkeye, War of Kings: Ascension, and Terror Inc. II for Marvel, and R.E.B.E.L.S. & Vigilante for DC comics.

The Art of Scott Hanna is curated by Lawrence Klein, Chairman Emeritus and founder of the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. A resident of Pittsfield, Klein founded the New York based museum in 2001. “When I founded the museum, it was a way to set an example on how people can give back to the community. Similarly, I became involved with the Storefront Artist Project to give back to the community in which I now live,” said Klein.

In addition to the Hanna exhibition, Storefront Artist Project has teamed up with the Berkshire Bank Foundation, and will hold a series of related events and workshops focused on children beginning with an opening reception on August 1, sponsored by FANBOY Papers and Endurance Brewing Company. On August 2 Hanna will conduct a free, day-long workshop including a drawing demonstration, sketch-a-thon, and discussion on art, comics and drawing. Other events will include talks about writing, art, publishing, portfolio reviews and group workshops geared to children. All programs are free of charge and will be held at The Storefront Artists Project headquarters and at various other Pittsfield venues. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
