NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - With the help of seven strong innings from starting pitcher Brach Davis, the North Adams SteepleCats defeated the Lowell All-Americans 4-1 Thursday night at Joe Wolfe Field. Davis pitched seven shutout innings for the SteepleCats, allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out 10.
The SteepleCats scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning off All-Americans starter Leif Sorenson. Jonny Smith walked to lead off the inning, stole second base and scored from second on Cameron McMullen's two-out single up the middle. They added two more runs in the fifth off Sorenson when John Schultz doubled to left field and drove in Brandon Macias and Tony Brunetti. They added their fourth run in the seventh inning off reliever William Krasne when Schultz singled to right, stole second and third, and scored on a Kyle Felix passed ball.
Tommy Mackoul came into pitch the ninth inning for the SteepleCats and gave up the All-Americans' only run. Effrey Valdez doubled down the third base line, moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tom Quinn's ground out to second. Mackoul then walked the next two batters he faced before being lifted in favor of Ryan Fraser. Fraser walked the bases loaded, but eventually got David Gustafson to pop out to second to end the game.
Davis got the win for the SteepleCats, improved to 1-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.11. Sorenson got the loss in his season debut for the All-Americans. Fraser picked up the save, his first of the season. The All-Americans (3-6) travel to Newport, R.I. tomorrow to take on the Gulls while the SteepleCats (9-6) will be in Danbury, Conn. to take on the Westerners.
