MANCHESTER, Conn. – Starting pitching has been a strength for the SteepleCats all season long and Tuesday night in Manchester was no exception. Sean Burns, making just his second start of the season, pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out 12 Silkworms as the SteepleCats defeated the Silkworms 2-1.

Burns allowed just four hits over his seven innings of work. At one point, he struck out seven straight Silkworms. His 12 strikeouts tie a SteepleCats single game high this season. Brach Davis also struck out 12 batters last night at Lowell.

The SteepleCats broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Designated hitter Ted Blackman singled to right to lead off the inning. After a Brandon Macias fly out, center fielder John Schultz doubled to deep right center to score Blackman from first.

The SteepleCats extended their lead to 2-0 in the seventh inning. Catcher David Villasuso walked with two outs and scored on third baseman Bo Reeder’s double off the center field wall.

The Silkworms scored their lone run of the game in the eighth inning off reliever Ryan Fraser. Shortstop AJ Rusbarsky walked to lead off the inning and moved to second base on designated hitter Matt Grosso’s single to center field. Rusbarsky then scored from second base on center fielder Ted Zentek’s single up the middle.

After the run scored, Fraser was lifted in favor of Kevin Fuqua. Fuqua retired the next three batters in order to end the eighth inning. He came back out for the ninth and closed the door on the Silkworms to earn his seventh save of the season. Burns picked up the win and improved to 1-0 on the season. Joe DiRocco pitched six innings for the Silkworms, allowed one run on four hits and two walks and took the tough luck loss.

The Silkworms (7-18) are off tomorrow, and will play a split doubleheader at home on Thursday against the North Shore Navigators and Danbury Westerners. The SteepleCats will return home to Joe Wolfe Field to take on the Holyoke Blue Sox at 7 p.m. For more information, please visit www.steeplecats.com.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
