Women Funded for Leadership Training

04:23PM / Wednesday, August 05, 2009

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. - Karen Anne Fisher of Dalton and Nicole Garzino of Pittsfield are the first scholarship recipients of the Anne Sanford Legacy Fund. Established in 2009 by The Women’s Times as a fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, the Anne Sanford Legacy provides scholarships for women to attend political or professional leadership training programs.

Karen Anne Fisher has been granted $1,500 to attend the BoardSource Leadership Forum in Orlando, FL. She is the founder and executive director of the Center for Holistic Instruction in Pittsfield, a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of promising youth in poverty who have been affected by parental addiction.  She is a single mother who is dedicated to improving her ability to lead effectively. The Boardsource Leadership Forum will provide her with valuable guidance in governance practice at nonprofit organizations. Fisher says, “I look forward to the opportunity to engage in dialogue with other emerging and successful women leaders and to enhancing my leadership and organizational skills to serve the community.”

Nicole Garzino has been granted a $1,300 award to participate in the Junior League 2010 Winter Leadership Conference in Savannah, GA. She is an active community volunteer and leader employed in the nonprofit sector. She serves as Vice President/President Elect for the Junior League of Berkshire County. The Winter Leadership Conference will expand her experience in the field and focus on creating legacies of other trained women. Garzino says, “I will be meeting with other women leaders who have created strong training and development programs in their hometowns. I hope to be able to learn how to create a model that will work here in Berkshire County, so that we can expand our own women’s leadership programs right here at home.”

The Anne Sanford Legacy Fund was established by The Women’s Times to honor the memory of Anne Sanford, a pioneering businesswoman and community activist, who for ten years shared her varied business expertise with The Women's Times, serving as a consultant and sales director for the regional monthly. Individual contributions to the fund have been augmented with a significant gift from the Business Women’s Network, a now-defunct networking organization that Sanford helped to found in the tri-state area in the early 1990s.

A committee of community members with expertise in education and leadership development selected the candidates based on the combined criteria of: quality of the training program; potential impact of the program on the applicant’s life and studies/work; and evidence of the applicant’s ambition to apply this training. The next application deadline for the Anne Sanford Legacy Fund is May 15, 2010. Applications can be found online at www.berkshiretaconic.org/grantseekers or by calling 413.528.8039.

Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation builds stronger communities and improves the quality of life for all residents of Berkshire County, MA; Columbia County and northeast Dutchess County, NY; and northwest Litchfield County, CT. Thanks to its generous donors, in 2008 Berkshire Taconic distributed nearly $9 million in scholarships and grants for programs in the arts and education, health and human services, and environmental protection. Berkshire Taconic is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization.
