Program Seeks Investigators for Housing Bias Tests01:24PM / Tuesday, August 18, 2009
PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The Massachusetts Fair Housing Center (MFHC) is a non-profit civil rights enforcement agency. MFHC’s Housing Discrimination Project is recruiting “civil rights investigators” for a training session to be held at the Westside Neighborhood Resource Center on Thursday, August 27 from 6-8 pm.
MFHC, which serves Western and Central Massachusetts, trains people to respond to advertisements by landlords attempting to rent apartments in order to evaluate whether prospective renters are being treated fairly.
MFHC receives federal and municipal funding, as well as support from private sources. We serve individuals and families who believe they have been discriminated against because of their race, color, national origin, ancestry or religion. Sources of discrimination can also include the presence of children, marital or family status, disability, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, or source of income, including the use of rental subsidies or other assistance.
Examples of common forms of discrimination include:
* Misrepresenting the availability of housing * Steering clients to neighborhoods where people of their race or nationality live, but not to other neighborhoods * Refusing to rent to people with rental subsidies * Denying housing to, or evicting, families with children and pregnant women due to presence of lead paint * Charging higher rent to individuals from some racial or ethnic groups * Discriminatory advertising * Using threats, intimidation or coercion
For more information and to register for this training, contact (413) 442-9671. Pre-registration is required. |
