BMC/Fairview Achieve ISCD Accreditation

01:36PM / Wednesday, August 26, 2009

PITTSFIELD, Mass.- The Berkshire Health Systems bone densitometry program is the only site in Massachusetts and among only three in all of New England to achieve accreditation by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). BHS provides bone density testing at the Women's Imaging Center at Berkshire Medical Center and Fairview Hospital's Radiology Department. Nationwide, only 29 facilities have achieved ISCD accreditation to date.

The ISCD accreditation program is a dynamic, practice-based assessment of components within a facility that specializes in skeletal assessment. To achieve ISCD facility accreditation, the facility director, all clinicians and all technologists are required to be ISCD certified or its equivalent. The performance of all facility personnel is assessed as part of the accreditation process. Quality control and quality assurance of the equipment located at the facility, accuracy and precision of the scans generated, regulatory compliance, general business operations and interfacing with patients and referring physicians is also part of the accreditation process.

Bone density testing is recommended for women during menopausal transition who have risk factors for bone fractures, all women aged 65 and older and men 70 and older, men under 70 with risk factors, adults with fragility fracture, anyone being considered for treatment for low bone mass and anyone receiving medication or having a medical condition associated with bone loss that would lead to treatment for low bone mass.

For more information on the bone density testing program at Berkshire Health Systems or to make an appointment for a bone density test, call 413-447-2451.
