Public Informational Meeting on Recently Completed Housing Study12:52PM / Thursday, September 03, 2009
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Mayor James M. Ruberto announced a public information meeting at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 on a recently completed Housing Needs Analysis and Development Recommendations Study. This public meeting will be held in City Council Chambers at City Hall.
In November 2008, Pittsfield was one of eighteen communities in the Commonwealth to receive a $75,000 grant from the Commonwealth under their Gateway Plus Action Grant Program. The program’s intent is to assist recipient cities identify their specific housing or mixed-use development needs to enhance their economic vitality and the quality of life for all residents.
The City of Pittsfield engaged a consultant, GLC Development Resources Inc., to prepare a Housing Needs Analysis and development recommendations for the Westside, Morningside, and Downtown neighborhoods. Specifically the report aimed to develop an inventory of existing housing and conditions in the City’s urban center and two surrounding neighborhoods; to identify housing needs in those neighborhoods; conduct an evaluation of housing opportunities to meet those needs; and develop an action plan for both neighborhoods.
Input was solicited from the Westside and Morningside Initiatives as well as local partners, such as Berkshire Community Action Council (BCAC), Berkshire Housing Services (BHS), Berkshire County Regional Housing Authority (BCRHA), Pittsfield Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity, the Berkshire County Board of Realtors, and the Rental Housing Association of Berkshire County. Input was also sought from several local lenders.
Mayor Ruberto said, “With all the accomplishments we have had over the past five years in housing, combining an enhanced code enforcement program and the City’s housing rehabilitation program, this study gives points us in the direction of the future housing needs for the City’s most critical neighborhoods.” GLC Development has recently completed this housing study and will be sharing their findings with the community at the public meeting September 9. |
