New Name for Highpoint School Building

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Hillcrest Educational Centers announced it is changing the name of the school classroom building at its Highpoint Campus in Lenox to the Pierre Joseph Academic Center. The name change, honoring a founding board member, will occur on September 18, 2009 at a private dedication ceremony.

Hillcrest President Gerard Burke said, “We are proud to dedicate the residential school classroom building to Pierre, who was a visionary in helping develop facilities for our students with unique educational needs. Pierre is a genuinely caring and selfless man who gives of himself to help others. These are the traits we’ve worked to instill in our thousands of students over the last 25 years.”

Joseph served on the Hillcrest board as a founding member until his retirement at the end of 2008, ending a 2-year stint as Board President. Joseph’s list of affiliations includes: Hancock School Committee; Chairman of the Hancock Board of Selectmen; Berkshire Health Systems Board; Hancock Shaker Village overseer; St. Mark’s Finance Committee Chairman; Pittsfield Catholic Foundation; and Pittsfield Catholic School Committee. Joseph is a licensed real estate broker in Massachusetts and New York and is affiliated with the National Association of Realtors. Joseph and Patty, his wife of 45 years, reside in Hancock, Massachusetts.

Hillcrest recently completed renovations to the school building adding space for new classrooms and centralizing all Highpoint academic activities.

Hillcrest Educational Centers is a private not-for-profit organization providing treatment and special education services to children and adolescents with unique psychological and learning needs. Along with the Highpoint Campus, Hillcrest operates the Housatonic Academy, Berkshire County's only therapeutic day school located in Pittsfield, as well as two other residential treatment centers located in Lenox and Great Barrington. In addition, Hillcrest operates Hillcrest Dental Care, the largest provider or oral healthcare services to MassHealth recipient’s special needs patients. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
