Mental Health Alliance State Convention Slated Oct. 2403:41PM / Friday, September 18, 2009
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County and Western Mass. chapters of the National Alliance of Mental Health will host the state convention on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, 1277 Main St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
NAMI Berkshire County is a nonprofit, grassroots organization dedicated to helping people affected by mental illness that will celebrate its 25th year this fall. It provides education and support programs, information and referral services and advocacy at all levels and is one of 23 affiliate chapters statewide.
Of special interest to Berkshire County residents will be the address by the keynote speaker Dr. Alex Sabo, chairman and residency program director of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Berkshire Medical Center and local actor Frank La Frazia, who will perform a one-man theatrical presentation "Living with It," about growing up with a mother who is bipolar.
There is also a consumer arts marketplace filled with arts and craft wares and an exhibitors' area. More than 300 participants are expected.
There will be 14 workshops suitable for lay people as well as professionals; educational credits are available.
A continental breakfast and lunch are included in convention price: $50 members, $60 non-members and $15 low-income. Special accommodation can be made for the deaf and hard of hearing. A limited number of convention scholarship applications are available.
A bus will be leaving from the Department of Mental Health building parking lot at 333 East St. promptly at 7 a.m. for those wishing to attend.
