3rd Annual Youth Block Party At The Pittsfield Common

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Pittsfield Youth Commission will host the 3rd Annual Youth Block Party at the Common, on First Street, on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 from 12 to 5 pm. This year’s free event has a 70s theme so put on your bell-bottoms and dancing shoes and come out to enjoy live music, dance, and much more.

The free event kicks off with two hours of live music performed by local youth rock bands, and will feature performances throughout the day by the Rhythms B-boys, a Samba band, local hip-hop artist Lady B, and drumming from Youth Alive alumni Jerome Edgerton. The afternoon will include a basketball shooting contest, a skateboarding contest in the skate park, an Oreo-eating contest, a graffiti demonstration and mural creation, a hip 70s fashion show, and a DJ dance party to cap off the festivities.

The event will also have a variety of tasty treats available for purchase from Fat Chicken Bar-B-Que, Liberty Pizza, V’s Ice Cream, and more, as well as information tables and other vendors.

The Pittsfield Youth Commission is continuously working to connect YOUTH throughout Pittsfield in order to create and support new and old community initiatives. We are striving to reach out to all people in Pittsfield, including students, parents, local leaders, and school officials in order to provide them with youth news, activities, and event opportunities, all specifically for teenagers. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
