WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Clark's special exhibition Through the Seasons: Japanese Art in Nature, hailed as "a reminder of how much expressiveness and detail can be rendered with a few perfectly angled strokes of a brush," by Tresca Weinstein of Berkshire Living, closes on Sunday, October 18. The Clark's Stone Hill Center is the exclusive venue for this exhibition.
Through the Seasons brings together screens and scrolls from the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries and displays them with contemporary ceramics, each work emphasizing the inspirational role of nature in Japanese art. Drawn from both public institutions and private collections, many of these works have never before been exhibited. Among the seminal works on view is Suzuki Kiitsu's striking Morning Glories, a twelve foot long, six-panel folding screen on loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This exhibition was organized by the Clark and is supported by the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Parnassus Foundation, the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation, and the Mary and Jackson Burke Foundation. Miyeko Murase, former Consultant for Japanese Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and professor emerita at Columbia University, is curator.
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, with landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand Associates, Stone Hill Center opened in 2008 to critical acclaim. The building takes advantage of the Clark's dramatic natural setting on 140 acres. Stone Hill Center houses intimately scaled galleries, a meeting and studio art classroom, an outdoor café, and the Williamstown Art Conservation Center.
After viewing Through the Seasons, visitors can witness the literal changing of the seasons, as the scenic Berkshires offer a breathtaking autumn landscape. Experience the countryside's transformation from dark green to a spectrum of vivid hues by wandering the Clark's hiking trails.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (open Mondays in July and August). Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May.
