NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University volleyball team continued its recent stretch of strong play Wednesday evening with a 3-0 defeat of MCLA on Senior Night at Andrews Hall. The Cadets, who have won five of their last six matches, beat the Trailblazers by set scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 27-25.
The Cadets (17-10) jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first set, and they rode that momentum to a comfortable 25-11 victory.
The Trailblazers (11-12) opened a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, but Norwich scored the next four points to inch in front 4-3. MCLA fought back with four straight points to reclaim a three-point lead at 7-4. An 11-4 spurt by the Cadets helped them take a 15-11 lead and they never looked back en route to a 25-16 verdict.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair that needed extra points to be decided. MCLA took control early, outscoring Norwich 9-3 to start the frame. A 9-4 burst by the Cadets trimmed their deficit to 13-12, but the Trailblazers scored six of the next seve points to assume a 19-13 edge. NU again responded, reeling off an 8-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. A 4-2 run by MCLA gave the Trailblazers a 24-23 lead, and it looked like they were poised to secure the win. Norwich fought back one last time, however, ending the game on a 4-1 spurt to complete the sweep.
The Cadets honored their two seniors, Lisset Magdaleno and Nicole Kasanoff, in a special pre-game ceremony.
Norwich wraps up its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season schedule on Saturday, Oct. 31, when Cadets travel to Boston, Mass., to battle league rival Simmons College. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
