Williams Hosting 'MathBlast' for Mount Greylock, BArT

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Students in 10th grade at Mount Greylock Regional High School and Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School will get a taste of college-level math on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

For the second consecutive year, professors at Williams College will host high school students and their math teachers for a morning MathBlast.

Students and teachers from both schools will each choose four 30-minute workshops to be led by faculty from the Williams Math and Statistics Department. The workshops will cover a wide range of topics in an interactive, hands-on format.

Colin Adams, the Thomas T. Read Professor of Mathematics at Williams, will lead the session "Why Knot?" in which participants will probe knot theory and its applications to DNA and to synthetic chemistry. These workshops are an occasion for "students to see that math is a lot more than numbers and equations," said Adams.

This appreciation for the relevance of mathematics in our everyday lives is what Mount Greylock Assistant Principal Christopher Barnes sees as the greatest benefit of these workshops. "By working with the Williams faculty on real-life math applications, our aim is to energize students and faculty around the subject of math," Barnes said recently.

At BArT, math teacher Eric Trumble agreed that the everyday application of mathematics is of interest to the students.

"They are excited about the topics being presented," said Trumble. "As a teacher, it’s important to show students how math can be applied in a variety of ways. I know they’re also happy to be working with other schools."

MathBlast is sponsored by the Mathematics and Statistics Department of Williams College and the Williams Center at Mount Greylock, with funding provided by Williams College and the Finnerty Fund.

"This particular program grew out of a pilot through the Williams Center at Greylock,” said Kaatje White, director of the Williams Center. "It is a good example of how an idea generated through the Williams Center has expanded to be a collaborative effort with another school in the community."

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
