Update: Steve Caporizzo of Channel 10 News describes storm as "coming like a freight train." Should see snow before midnight but will be out of here by morning. Estimated 6-9 inches for the lower elevations; up to 14 inches in Southern Vermont, hilltowns.

Caporizzo doesn't expect school closures, but we'll double check in the morning. Right now, at 10:23 p.m., it's pouring outside.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Get out the shovels. The late summer hiatus is coming to a close as a major snowstorm makes its way into the Berkshires tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 6 tonight until 6 a.m. Thursday. From 5 to 10 inches is expected to fall across the Southern Berkshires, with up to a foot in North Berkshire and Southern Vermont.

Worse, the rain will continue off and on again today before changing to snow. Beware of black ice conditions. Temperatures will be upper 30s by later today, dropping into the 20s overnight. Most cities and towns have already instituted winter parking bans so don't leave your car on the street.

As the second major storm of the season approaches, the state's Emergency Management Agency Director Kurt Schwartz reminds residents, "Before snow, ice and severe winter weather hit the region, it is important that you take the proper steps to ensure the safety of your family and home."

Have an emergency kit handy, make sure phones and other electronics are charged, keep a flashlight handy, make sure you've got sufficient heating fuel, keep your chimney or heating equipment cleaned and properly maintained, and make sure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working.

Understand the winter terminology used by weather forecasters:

1. Winter Storm Watch – Be alert, a storm is likely.

2. Winter Storm Warning – Take action, the storm is in or entering the area.

3. Blizzard Warning – Snow and strong winds combined will produce blinding snow, near zero visibility, deep drifts, and life-threatening wind chill.  Seek refuge immediately.

4. Winter Weather Advisory – Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous, especially to motorists.

5. Frost/Freeze Warning – Below freezing temperatures are expected and may cause damage to plants, crops or fruit trees.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
