Lenox, Lee Teaming Up For 'Eventful' Public Transit

LENOX, Mass. — Lenox's popular program of free weekend bus rides will be expanded to include transit within and between Lee and Lenox on Saturday, Sept. 22, to encourage ridership to and from Lenox's Apple Squeeze and Lee's Founders Day festivals.

The town of Lenox already offers free bus rides on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer, a program it says has been successful in increasing traffic as well as overall fare paying ridership.

"The town and the business community in Lenox has been very supportive of the free ride promotions within Lenox that have been in place on Fridays and Saturdays for the last three years," said L. Scott Laugenour, BRTA board representative for Lenox. "We have seen ridership grow as more people take advantage of free trials and then become fare paying passengers."

The experimental one-day expansion of the free ride program was provisionally approved by BRTA in late July before being approved by the Lenox Board of Selectmen and endorsed by the Lenox Environment Committee.

Laugenour said the idea had been proposed as a way to promote public transportation and relieve downtown parking congestion, and is also consistent with the town's Green Communities Designation

"We're looking forward to working with Lee both to build awareness of public transportation options and to connect the two downtown festivals by making it easier and hassle free to get from one to another and back again," said Laugenour.

The No. 2 bus line runs hourly through Lenox. Northbound departures from Town Hall are at 55 minutes after the hour. Southbound departures from Town Hall are on the hour. Bicycle racks are available on every bus.

With the exception of the partnership with the town of Lee on Sept. 22, multiple-town rides will require normal multizone fares.
