Trailblazers Drop Fourth Straight

WESTFIELD, Mass. — The Westfield State Owls took charge early on in the opening half before pulling away in the closing period in defeating Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 71-44, Tuesday evening in women's basketball action. The Owls evened their MASCAC mark at 2-2 (10-7 overall) while the Trailblazers dropped their fourth straight game in falling to 0-3 in conference play and 8-8 overall.

In the opening period, the Owls went on a 15-4 run to grab a 26-13 lead. They coasted into halftime leading MCLA 35-25.
 
After halftime, MCLA fell behind by 16 early before cutting the margin to 43-33 before the Owls used a strong run to put away the Trailblazers. Westfield outscored MCLA 17-1 over the next six plus minutes to put them up 60-34 with 10:52 left to play. MCLA did not get within 22 the rest of the way.
 
Lucy Tremblay was the only player in double figures for MCLA, ending the night with 12 points and 7 assists.
 
The Trailblazers will look to snap their skid on Thursday night when they
host Framingham State at 5:30 p.m.

SteepleCats Shut Out on Road

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Four Vermont pitchers combined to strike out 11 and allow four hits Tuesday as the Mountaineers beat the North Adams SteepleCats, 11-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
 
Evan Meier, Bobby Stang, Tonny Woodie and Chris Diaz each had a hit for the SteepleCats, who used five pitchers in the loss.
 
North Adams (0-2) comes home Tuesday to host the Mystic Schooners at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field.
