Kayla Field, left, Zach Yeaton, Steve Cote, Allison Brassard, Jake Boillat, Alison Tassone, Tyler Cote and Matt Vachereau led Drury to a second state title.

AUBURN, Mass. — The Blue Devil's bowling team defended their Massachusetts State Bowling title this past weekend at Auburn Lanes, taking the championship for the second consecutive year.

Sixteen teams qualified for this year's Massachusetts State High School Bowling Championships. Berkshire County was well represented again this year with six schools qualifying. In addition to Drury and Taconic High, this year's Berkshire County Champs, teams from Pittsfield, Lee, Wahconah Regional and St. Joseph high schools all qualified.
Teams from Gardner and Worcester County also participated.

At the end of the preliminary round, which entailed two regular games and five baker games, the Blue Devils were seeded 3rd in a four-team step ladder roll off. Taconic High School was seeded 1st, Lee High School was seeded 2nd and South High No. 1 from Worcester County was seeded 4th.

In the quarterfinals, it was the Blue Devils up against a much improved South High team in a two-game baker format with the team having the highest total pin fall moving on to bowl 2nd seed Lee. After a slow start, the Blue Devils held a slim 14-pin lead but in Game 2 they opened it, winning by a margin of 101 pins, 394-293.

This set up a rematch of a match held earlier in the week against Lee High School in the Berkshire County Championship semi-finals. The Blue Devils continued their striking ways and jumped out to a 48-pin lead and maintained the lead throughout beating Lee 369-328.  This set up a match against the current Berkshire County Champions, Taconic High School.

The Blue Devils started out Game 1 with the first six strikes on their way to a game of 253 and carried a 34-pin lead into Game 2. Though the strikes didn't fall as easily in Game 2, the Blue Devils held off a very tough Taconic team to win 445-404 and secure their second consecutive state title.

Blue Devil junior Jake Boillat was awarded the MVP award for the tournament. Boillat threw games of 260 and 234 during match play in the preliminary rounds and continued his striking ways throughout the Baker games.
