NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — After scoring a lot of runs in Game 2, the Elks did a little of everything in the finale of the city Babe Ruth Championship series on Wednesday at Alcombright Field.

Mason Field drove in the game-winning run, and Schuyler Robinson pitched five shutout innings to lead the Elks to a 3-1 win over Consigli and a 2-1 series victory in the finale for both teams.

"From the start of warmups to throughout the game, I couldn't have asked for them to be more prepared," Elks coach Tom Rumbolt said. "And that's really what our season was about — developing through the year where we come into the game physically and mentally focused. And that's what we did right from the start.

"I was really proud of them defensively. We played a sound, sound game."

And occasionally the Elks went a little beyond "sound."

In the second, Hayden Bird stopped a Consigli rally by diving for a sinking line drive in left field and firing to first to double off a runner for the inning's third out. In the fourth, Logan Rumbolt gunned down a runner attempting to steal second. And in the seventh, second baseman Thaylen Harrison dove to his left for a ground ball and threw to first from his knees for an out.

"We needed good defense because we were playing against a good team," Tom Rumbolt said.

The Elks' offense helped the cause 24 hours earlier by scoring enough runs to shorten Game 2 of the best-of-three series and allow Rumbolt to sit No. 1 pitcher Robinson after two innings of work.

Logan Rumbolt worked the first two innings on the hill for the Elks on Wednesday evening, allowing just two hits and a run before going behind the plate to catch Robinson.

Robinson proceeded to allow no hits and strike out eight to earn the win. HIs opposite number, Brodie Altiere, was nearly as good for Consigli in a complete-game loss. Altiere struck out nine while allowing just four hits and two earned runs.

He got a lead to work with in the second when Connor Guyette walked and moved up on an Adam Dufur and a groundout before scoring on Zack Decker's single to right to make it 1-0.

The lead held up until the bottom of the fourth and disappeared thanks to bottom of the Elks' order.

No. 4 hitter Ryan Meehan got the winning rally started with a walk. He then stole a base and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on ground ball from Robbie Pecor. Bird reached on an outfield error, stole another base and scored to make it 2-1 when No. 8 hitter Mason Field singled to right.

"We knew coming in that it was going to be a tight ballgame, and it played out exactly the way we thought," Rumbolt said. "We knew runs were going to be at a premium. Both teams had good pitchers going. And they were two teams that played well and deserved to be there.

"The impressive part for us was the one big inning we had when we came back and scored the two runs, that was the four-hitter on down. It was the bottom half of our lineup that really came through. Two games ago, they struggled, but that's where keeping that confidence and staying focused on what their job is and learning from two games ago to shorten up their swings and put the ball in play."

The Elks picked up some insurance in the seventh.

Harrison reached on a one-out double to right field and came home on Robinson's single up the middle to make it a two-run game, which was one more run than Robinson the pitcher needed to close the door and send the Elks home with the league title.
