PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Taconic High School senior Lucas Benjamin was honored Tuesday for his efforts in and outside of the classroom.
Benjamin was recognized as a 2013 Massachusetts High School Hero, an honor from two Boston-based companies looking to promote high school athletes.
Representatives from Plymouth Rock Assurance Corp., radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub and Pittsfield-based Wheeler & Taylor Reality (a Plymouth Rock insurance provider) presented Benjamin with a $1,000 scholarship at Taconic on Tuesday.
Only seven students across the state received the honor and they will be recognized at the state high school football championships at Gillette Stadium in December.
Benjamin won the award for earning a 101 grade average as well as being captain of the swim team, member of the school district's Student-Athlete Leadership Academy, a member of the National Honor Society and being president of the school's chapter of the Massachusetts Junior League.
He has taken roles in school plays, a member of Students Against Drunk Driving, speaker at the National Youth Leadership Conference, a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club and worked on the political campaigns of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal and President Barack Obama. More on Benjamin's accomplishments can be found here.
