PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield Suns General Manager Kevin McGuire has been named the Futures Collegiate Baseball League's 2013 Executive of the Year.
The announcement was made by FCBL Commissioner Chris Hall as part of the league's annual postseason awards in Chelmsford. The FCBL awards are voted on by personnel from each of the league's nine member clubs.
"Kevin was able to overcome countless obstacles, ranging from establishing a new brand in a discerning baseball market to dealing with the unique hurdles specific to Wahconah Park, in helping to create a sustainable and successful franchise," said Jeff Goldklang, of the Pittsfield Suns ownership group.
McGuire is a 2010 graduate of State University of New York at Cortland with a degree in sports management. He just completed his fourth season with the Goldklang Group. Before joining the Suns, McGuire worked for the Hudson Valley Renegades as the director of promotions and entertainment. His responsibilities with the Suns include sponsorships, development of promotional schedules, giveaways and providing the Goldklang Group's brand of family fun on a nightly basis.
"Kevin's shared commitment to bring the best quality of entertainment and customer service to Pittsfield and the fans makes him most deserving of this award," said Tyler Tumminia, another member of the Pittsfield Suns ownership group.
"There is no better feeling than being recognized by a group of your peers and I am incredibly honored," said McGuire. "However, this award belongs equally to the fans, sponsors and community supporters of the Suns. In addition, this award would not be possible without the hard work that our Assistant General Manager Jackie Wendling puts in day in and day out."
The Pittsfield Suns experienced several difficult circumstances during the 2013 season. With historically heavy rains pelting New England in the month of June, the nearly 100-year-old stadium experienced flooding that washed out several key home dates. McGuire rallied staff and the community with a consistent approach that not only helped to salvage the season, but allowed the Suns to further build their success. Under his leadership, the Suns hosted the FCBL All-Star game in front of a packed house and rave reviews, set the FCBL attendance record with 4,775 fans on July 4th, and effectively erased the memory of Mother Nature's early season wrath.
In addition to the turnaround, he was an essential member in assembling the 2013 FCBL All-Star Game and MLB Scout Day festivities hosted at historic Wahconah Park.
"Kevin was the ideal host for the event and continued the tradition of having the FCBL run the best Scout Day and All-Star Game in the country," said Commissioner Chris Hall. He went on to say, "Kevin is a great example of hard work and determination and will have great success in the game of baseball."
