Northern Berkshire Black Bears Win Squirt Winter Classic
The Northern Berkshire Black Bears won the 2014 CSB Tournament.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Northern Berkshire Black Bears took home the championship trophy for the second straight season from the CSB Squirt Winter Classic in South Burlington.
The Black Bears won the 2014 tournament with a perfect record of 4-0 outscoring their opponents 25-5.
The Chittenden South Burlington Squirt Winter Classic takes place during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend every January and features players from Vermont, New York and Massachusetts.
Leading the offense for Northern Berkshire in the tournament was Ethan Paligo, who finished the event with 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points in four games. Danny Hunt was second on the team in tournament scoring with five goals and six assists for 11 points, while Branden Lincoln ranked third in points for the weekend with six goals and two assists for eight points.
As a team, the Black Bears had a total of 10 different skaters register at least a point in the tournament. The following were named as Players of the Game: Chase VanderWoude (G), Ethan Paligo, Tyler Pettit and Luke Farrington.
The Northern Berkshire squirt team will compete at the Massachusetts state championship tournament in Belmont in March.
Northern Berkshire Youth Hockey plays in the Tech Valley Hockey League, which consists of teams located in Pittsfield, Mass., and from Saratoga, Adirondack, Schenectady, Troy, Albany, Clifton Park and Bethlehem in New York.
Northern Berkshire Youth Hockey will be hosting its annual Spring Fling Tournament the weekend of March 14-16 for teams at the Mite, Squirt B, Squirt C/House age groups. The annual Spring Fling Tournament for Peewee B and Bantam B teams will be played the weekend of March 28-30.
All games will be played at the home of Northern Berkshire Youth Hockey, the Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Rink in North Adams, Mass.
Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam teams will play a three-game minimum, while Mite teams will play a jamboree format dependent on the number of Mite teams entered in the tournament. Awards will be presented to both champions and runners-up for each age group.
