NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The snowstorm that started Thursday morning is expected to leave another foot of snow by tomorrow, with total accumulation of 24 inches.
The National Weather Service is warning that blowing and drifting snow may cause dangerous driving conditions through Friday.
North Adams Public Schools have already announced it would be closed Friday, Valentine's Day. All other school districts in the county have followed suit. Next week is school vacation, so students across the Berkshires are getting a longer break this year.
Berkshire Community College has also canceled all classes for Friday.
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts opens at 11 a.m.
The heavy snowfall, which could fall at 1 to 2 inches an hour, was also accompanied by sleet or freezing rain in some areas. By midnight, the sleet could be heard beating against the sides of houses and windows.
Motorists are advised to park off city and town streets to allow plows to do their work; during snow emergencies your car maybe towed or ticketed. Residents are also reminded to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of the storm.
BerkshireRides will not be providing services until after 2 p.m. on Friday.
The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition's monthly forum on Friday has been canceled.
Some municipalities have declared snow emergencies, meaning motor vehicles be parked off streets to accommodate plows.
• ADAMS has declared a snow emergency from 1 p.m. through Saturday at 9 a.m. Town Hall, the library and Council on Aging will open at 11 a.m..
:: Adams Community Bank will open Friday at 10 a.m.
• The DALTON CRA will reopen at Friday at 7 a.m. Friday's 5:30 a.m. Boot Camp and 7:30 a.m. Dynamic Yoga are cancelled.
• LENOX has declared a snow emergency is in effect until 3 p.m. Friday.
• NORTH ADAMS has declared a snow emergency into Saturday morning; City Hall, the library and Spitzer Center will open at 11 a.m. The Transfer Station in closed today.
• PITTSFIELD has declared a snow emergency beginning at 6 p.m. through Saturday morning at 7; street parking is allowed on North Street between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. only. The 3-hour section at the McKay parking lot may be used without penalty.
:: Allied Trash pickup and recycling is closed today; Pittsfield pickups will be delayed until Saturday.
:: The Pittsfield Family YMCA's downtown site is open for elementary before and after-school age participants starting at 6:30 a.m. today.
:: The Berkshire Museum is closed.
• Norman Rockwell Museum will open at noon. Visitors should check www.nrm.org for further updates.
• The RICHMOND Library is closing at 11:30 and will reopen Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, Lanesborough had a total of 16 inches at 6:24 Friday morning. Also reporting more than a foot are Williamstown with 15 and Adams at 14.7. Pittsfield recorded 10 and Clarksburg 9.5.
Stamford, Vt., is reporting 20.8 inches (thus validating our suspicions that the 7 inches on the editor's back deck was too low, and possibly resulting from drifting).
A number of town in New York's Capital District are reporting more 20 inches, including South Berne in Albany County with 27 inches.
We would imagine the totals will be higher when the hilltowns report in.
