Wahconah High Names Valedictorian, Salutatorian for 2014

DALTON, Mass. — Wahconah Regional High School has named Rose L. May as valedictorian and Eleanor M. Cherry as salutatorian of the class of 2014.

Both will speak at the graduation ceremonies on Sunday, June 8, at 1 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

May, daughter of Jeffrey May and Kara Thornton of 194 Sleepy Hollow Road, is a member and president of National Honor Society and the Latin Club.

She was captain of the cross country team and also participated in track. Within the community, she has been an active member of the Buddy Program, Berkshire Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Program and vice president of Rotary Interact. She received the Dartmouth Book Award, the St. Michael's College Award and was selected as a representative to Girls State.


May plans to attend Bates College in the fall.

Cherry, daughter of Michael and Mary Cherry of 34 Patricia Ave., is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, student representative to the School Committee and a captain of the Mock Trial program.

She is involved with the Dalton Ballet Studio as a dancer and assistant teacher. She also teaches dance at the Buddy Games and the Craneville Extend Program. She received the George Eastman Young Leaders Award and the Mount Holyoke College Book Award.

Cherry plans to attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the fall.

Dalton CRA May Day Races Return May 5

DALTON, Mass.  — The 47th annual Community Recreation Association May Day Races will be held Sunday, May 5, at Nessacus Middle School, with major sponsorship by Greylock Federal Credit Union.
 
Races include 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer, the Obstacles & Popsicles kids’ races for ages 8 and under, and a 1-mile Splatter Sprint for ages 8 and up, all with chip timing by Berkshire Running Center, along with an untimed fun walk.
 
The 5K road/trail race, 10K road race and fun walk begin at 9 a.m. The Obstacles & Popsicles races begin at 10 a.m., with the Splatter Sprint immediately following.
 
The first 100 runners to register (combined 5K/10K) will receive a long-sleeve wicking T-shirt. Every participant in the Obstacles & Popsicles kids’ races will receive a ribbon and freeze pop at the finish line. All proceeds benefit nonprofit CRA and Dalton Youth Center programs.
