Canal Street Fair Runs Sunday in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Canal Street Family Fair will return for a third time this Sunday "bigger and better.'
The fair is sponsored by the Crystal Hard Hat Saloon and all proceeds go to the Shriners' Hospital for Children.
Saloon owner and event coordinator Todd Hebert said the fair grows more and more every year.
"There is a lot going on, and we are outgrowing the area, which is OK," Hebert said. "I am really psyched about that, and I think next year we are going to ask the mayor if we can use Noel Field and utilize that next year and make it a little bigger and a little better."
Hebert said there will be various food vendors as well as children's activities such as a bouncy bounce and a dunking tank. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction.
There will also be educational demonstrations from the Fire Department and the North Adams Ambulance Service, said Hebert, and demonstrations from Zumba and Miner Combat.
Along with the vendors and demonstrations he said there will be two bands: Raw Energy and Smash4.
"It's just going to be a good time for all; we are going to shut the street down from top to bottom," he said.
Hebert has owned the Crystal Hard Hat for seven years and has held a benefit for the Shriners each year.
"Every year I have done something, and it gets bigger and bigger every year," Hebert said. "The first year we did it we just put a tent up and cooked some food … the last couple years we have done the street fair."
A Shriner himself, Hebert said the fair is about the children not the bar.
"I took the Crystal Hard Hat name out only because a lot of people were backing out because of the bar," he said. "I want people to understand that it is not about the bar; the bar doesn’t make anything off of this.
"It is all about the kids."
Hebert said this is his third year holding the fair on Canal Street. Although the Crystal Hard Hat still runs the fair, Hebert said this is the first year the city is involved.
The event kicks off Sunday at noon and runs until 6.
"There will be lots of motorcycles and cars so it will be a good time and the weather is supposed to be beautiful," Hebert said.
