Weather Service Reports Dalton Hit by Tornado

DALTON, Mass. — The National Weather Service said a short-lived EF-1 tornado touched down in Dalton during Sunday's storm.

According to a statement on the NWS website, the tornado "touched down in Greenridge Park along South Street and moved southeast up a hill and ended behind residences along Lindsay drive."

It nearly cleared a quarter-mile forest path about 10 to 20 yards wide "leaving a noticeable trail."  

The tornado touched down at about 4:55 p.m. on Sunday with winds at about 90 mph.


The town was also hit by a microbursts to the northwest and southwest of the tornado's track. The winds moved from north northeast to south southwest, according to the NWS report, and damaged both hard and softwood trees within the area bounded by Richard Drive, Hubbard Avenue and Lindsay Drive. One home had its roof lifted.

The National Weather Service said the report was preliminary.

The town declared a state of emergency on Sunday afternoon for primarily the south end of town and reported trees and lines down between Greenridge Playground and Dalton Division Road.

A second tornado swept through Revere, just north of Boston, on Monday. The tornado was an EF-2 with winds at about 120 mph. The Northeast has been hit with a series of significant thunderstorms over the pat few weeks.

Dalton Seeks Input on Hazard Mitigation Plan

DALTON, Mass. — The town invites the community to participate in a public meeting as it updates its Hazard Mitigation Plan. 
 
The meeting will be held on Friday, March 8 from 10:30 to 11:30 am at Town Hall. Participants can also attend the meeting virtually using this information:
This plan details all the natural hazard risks that may impact the town and includes potential actions to mitigate those risks.
 
The Town invites residents from both Dalton and regional communities to actively participate in this upcoming public meeting. The town welcomes insights on identifying high-risk hazards, pinpointing vulnerable areas within the town, and providing constructive feedback on effective strategies for mitigating these risks. 
 
The Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee, in partnership with Jamie Caplan Consulting LLC, a Northampton based firm, is developing the plan with a grant from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). 
 
FEMA approval, coupled with Town adoption, will enable Dalton to access pre- and post-disaster hazard mitigation grant funds.
