Josh Billings Triathlon Seeks Volunteers

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The 38th annual Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon is calling on volunteers to help support its historic race on Sept. 14.
Routinely, the race requires some 350 volunteers to help the event run smoothly.
“The Josh” – as it is known to locals and participants – is the second oldest triathlon of its kind in the country and has taken place in Berkshire County since 1977.  Race proceeds have benefited Berkshire United Way since 2002 and total nearly $52,000 since that time.
“We’re pleased that we are able to support Berkshire United Way," race director Patty Spector said. “We’re looking for folks to register if they haven’t yet for this historic event – and we’re always looking for volunteers. This event runs smoothly year after year thanks to the generosity of this community’s spirit of volunteerism”
Berkshire United Way President and CEO Kris Hazzard said the event has made a long-standing commitment to supporting its community.
“The Josh is one of those rare opportunities for people of all ages and talents to come together and compete good naturedly, enjoy the outdoors and feel a part of their community," Hazzard said. "The Josh supports Berkshire United Way with proceeds from the event – and this generosity helps us advance the common good for a better life for all in the Berkshires.”
A portion of the race that kicks off around 2:00 p.m. is the “Kids’ Race,” which is managed by Berkshire United Way volunteers, and additional volunteers are needed from the community to help run this race as well. Please contact Daniel Kaufman, Coordinator of Resource Development, if you’re interested in helping out that day with this fun kids’ event.
The 2014 Josh Billings Runaground is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 14. It covers five Berkshire County towns and consists of a 27-mile bike ride, a 5-mile canoe, kayak or paddleboard sprint, and a 6.2 mile run.  Teams and singles of all capabilities are encouraged to participate or volunteer.  For more information visit
