CHESHIRE, Mass. – The board of selectmen awarded bids for the Windsor Road repaving project and the purchase of a new truck dump truck with a plow during Tuesday night’s meeting.
Highway Superintendent Peter LeFebvre said he felt comfortable awarding the contracts to the lowest bidders.
The first contract the board approved was the blacktopping. Much of Windsor Road was washed out during summer storms. The project was awarded to DelSignore Companies for $173,400 or $72.25 per ton of asphalt. The highest bid was Lane Construction for $217,920.
DelSignore said, in the initial bid, there may be additional costs if extra mobilization is needed. However, LeFebvre assured the board this extra cost would only come into play if the contractors had to come back into town because of unforeseen circumstances with the project.
"If he has to pull out because of his problem there will be no mobilization cost, but if it is a problem of ours, say the road is not ready or something like that, then it is our problem and our cost," LeFebvre said.
He said the project is planned to last 2 1/2 days.
The board awarded the truck purchase to Delurey Sales and Service, which offered an International truck for $163,735. The highest bid was Patriot Freightliner Western Star with a vehicle for $175,882.
LeFebvre also said there is a pipe culvert that needs to be replaced on East Harbor Road. He said the pipe's bottom has been rusted out. He said because the area is a wetland the town may have to install an open bottom culvert.
"We will see what we can do and what we can get away with," LeFebvre said.
LeFabvre said another pipe culvert needs to be replaced on Stafford Hill, but there are no wetlands issues.
