The Selectmen approved a new job description for town administrator that will be mailed to the current applicants.

ADAMS, Mass. — Tourism Director Samantha Talora said Adams' first season of farmers markets was a success.

"It was my first time ever being a farmers market manager, so I learned a lot, and I learned how I want to proceed for the next season," Talora told the Selectmen on Wednesday. "Overall, I consider it a very successful season."

Talora said the farmers market averaged of 180 visitors per week, with the highest attendance at 350 people. She said the market started with 10 vendors and by the end of the summer grew to 23.

"We definitely got some recognition from the community and folks that were traveling elsewhere to come visit our market," she said.

Talora said next season she would like to extend the season and extend the hours.

"People have already expressed sadness that we aren't going to be around next week," she said. "It's good that people are already missing us."

She would also like create a committee to help her with the workload and in the decision making. She said anyone interested in joining the committee can contact her.

Talora said there may be a holiday harvest market in late November or early December.

Police Chief Richard Tarsa also went before the board to discuss extra enforcement on the back roads, specifically West Road. Because of the construction on Commercial Street [Route 8], many drivers take the back roads and drive too fast.

"We have beefed up enforcement in the area. I can tell you that there are cruisers that are sitting somewhere on that street form the Adams-Cheshire line to McAndrew King," Tarsa said.

Tarsa said Cheshire is also aware of the speeding.

"We have stopped people in Adams and have waited for them to go a half a mile down the road and they were stopped in Cheshire for the exact same thing," he said. "It has happened, and I am sure it is going to happen again."

Tarsa also reported that Kumar, the Adams K-9, received his bullet proof vest. It was donated by a nonprofit group called Vested Interest that fundraises for "every single canine that they can."

He said the vests can cost up to $2,000.

"They are an excellent organization, and to date they have outfitted over 400 dogs with vests," he said. "Each vest is donated in the memory of another canine. It is written on the vest in memory of Cesar."

Interim Town Administrator Donna Cesan said the Adams Station Project was awarded to Burke Construction. It was the lowest out of the three bidders. The total contractor costs will be $297,403.

The board approved an updated job description for the new town administrator position. The new job description will be mailed to the now 30 applicants.

There will be a hazardous waste roundup at the Police Department from 10 to 2 Saturday, Sept. 27. People are encouraged to bring old prescription drugs for disposal. Any medication should be kept in original bottles and sharp objects should be put in a protective container.
