3rd Annual Up Front for DeMar 5K Set Nov. 9

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The 3rd annual Up Front for DeMar 5k Race and 1 Mile walk will be held Sunday at 9 a.m.

The race starts at the North Adams Veterans Memorial at the corner of Route 2 and Eagle Street and ends at the American Legion.

New this year is a pasta dinner the evening before that will allow runners to "carb up" and get their race packets - and also allow all members of the community to be involved by joining us for the meal. The dinner will be from 4 to 7 at the North Adams American Legion, and tickets are $7 for adults or $5 for children or seniors.

Race registrations are available at the Berkshire Running Center in Pittsfield, the Northern Berkshire YMCA, Olympia Sports in North Adams, Planet Fitness in North Adams and Hot Spot Fitness and More in Adams. Registration is also available at RaceWire.com. Pasta dinner tickets are available through mail-in or online registration, at the North Adams American Legion and the Office of Community Development at North Adams City Hall.

Army Spc. Michael R DeMarsico volunteered to be "Up Front" — protecting his battalion and fellow soldiers. He was killed by an explosive device on Aug. 16, 2012, in Afghanistan — after finding 15 others and first saving his fellow soldiers.

His community came together to honor him, to welcome him home, to mourn him and to lay him at rest. Now the community can come together again to honor him and to raise money for the scholarship fund in his name.
