PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Bank has announced the creation of a new checking account for United States Military personnel called Heroes Advantage Checking.

In addition, Berkshire co-jointly announced its new veterans hockey contest — Hockey 4 Heroes — in partnership with NESN.  Both the account and contest began Nov. 1, and every U.S. veteran that opens a new Heroes Advantage Checking will automatically be entered into the Hockey 4 Heroes contest.

Heroes Advantage Checking is available to active, reserve and retired U.S. Military personnel with no monthly service charge, on-the-go accessibility and custom benefits. The Heroes Advantage Checking requires no minimum balance and has no monthly service fee. Additional features include no ATM fees anywhere and free mobile banking and deposit, online statements, online banking with bill pay, low balance alerts, FinanceWorks money management service and first order of Patriotic Checks with unlimited check writing.

Along with these exclusive product features for U.S. Military personnel, Berkshire Bank’s Foundation will be donating $5,000 to Soldier On, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that works in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide veterans with shelter and support. Their mission is to offer a continuum of care that includes immediate and long-term housing with services to formerly homeless veterans – assisting them in their transition from homelessness to homeownership.  The Berkshire Bank Foundation will also donate $25 to Soldier On for each open and active Heroes Advantage Checking Account on Veteran’s Day 2015.

In addition, Berkshire Bank and NESN will be holding a contest exclusively for veterans called Hockey 4 Heroes where four winners and their guests will win an exciting game day experience in NESN’s suite, chauffeured transportation to the arena, and a behind-the-scenes tour of NESN’s studios in Waltham. The Hockey 4 Heroes contest is open only to eligible veterans of the U.S. military, and the game day experience occurs on March 8, 2015.  Every United States Veteran that opens a new Heroes Advantage Checking will automatically be entered into the Hockey 4 Heroes contest.  The deadline for entries is Feb. 6, 2015 and no purchase is required to enter Hockey 4 Heroes. Visit berkshirebank.com for complete rules and to enter the contest.

Dalton Planning Board OKs Gravel Company Permit

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board approved the renewal of Nichols Sand and Gravel's special permit for earth removal.

The company, located at 190 Cleveland Road, operates a gravel pit there.

The hours of operation will remain 7 to 4 p.m. The commission approved owner Paul Nichols' request to allow trucks to depart the property in either direction.

Nichols has to apply for renewal of the special permit every year. The previous permit required the truck to exit the property to the right.

It makes more sense to go left if truck drivers have to go to the Pittsfield area, Nichols said. He has talked to the residents in the area and they are agreeable to the change.

Former residents requested this stipulation nearly 16 years ago to reduce the number of trucks using the residential street to avoid disturbing the quality of life and neighborhood.

There weren't any residents present during the meeting who expressed concerns regarding this change.
