The planned Adams Station Pavilion Project may have to be rebid.

ADAMS, Mass. — The scope of the planned Adams Station Pavilion Project will adjusted after bids for the work came in higher than expected.

The town received only two bids last week for the renovation of the former car wash building on Hoosac Street.

Salco Construction Co. Inc. of Pittsfield bid the lowest with $162,400 and Burke Construction Co. Inc. of Adams came in at $229,229.

Director of Community Development Donna Cesan said the town may reconsider what will be done.

"Bids came in high so we are currently evaluating the scope of work and will likely adjust and bid again," Cesan said.

The former car wash is being turned into a recreational area that will act as the terminal for the Adams end of the Berkshire Scenic Railway.

The project has been bid in two parts.

Burke Construction Co. has completed the exterior landscaping and paving, coming with the low bid of $233,233 in September.

This second bid was to focus on the actual structure. A boarding platform will also be constructed once the rail line is renovated and restored from Lime Street to Hoosac along with the extension of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail.

The state is in the process of negotiating purchase of the track line from North Adams to Adams, part of a larger package of rail properties with Pan Am Railways.

The railway has already moved cars into place in anticipation of beginning tourist rides in the spring on the existing tracks.

The town of Adams gave the total project a $552,000 budget. The town is responsible for $165,000 of the cost and the state will reimburse Adams for 70 percent of the project.
