10x10 Event: Friday: 10 Days of Play at Berkshire Museum

 

10 Days of Play returns this season in a big way with our newest exhibit, If/Then!  Test your skills in teamwork, communication and creativity through a new set of challenges each hour. Explore the exhibit through the eyes of an alien, communicate in secret codes, or don your detective hat and solve a scavenger hunt. With different activities featured each day, learners of all ages will find something to spark their imagination.

Friday+: Winter Exhibit: "Close to the Skin: A Revealing Look at Lingerie" at Arrowhead

 

From the collections of the Berkshire Historical Society come 200 years of Berkshire Lingerie. See "what your GrandMama wore" when she was courted by your GrandDad; learn the truth about the undergarments of the generations that created the community we live in, the difficulties, the beauties and the grandeur of clothing not meant to be seen by anyone else.

10x10 Event: Friday: Ten Spot Art Show at the Lichtenstein

 

The annual invitational Ten Spot Art Show features the best contemporary artists in the Berkshires and surrounding area, from north to south and in between.  This year, the artists were each nominated by former Ten Spot artists.  Each artist will have a work featured on a billboard placed somewhere in Berkshire County, bringing the gallery out to the streets.

10x10 Event: Friday+: 10 days, 10 stencils, 10 colors at Shire City Sanctuary 

 

An evolving demonstration and installation of a screen printed poster. We will be screen printing a ten color poster, adding one color to the poster every day for the ten days of the festival. Culminating in a limited edition, final, 10 color print on the last day of the 10×10 festival.

Friday: Town Players of Pittsfield Auditions

 

Town Players of Pittsfield announces auditions for a staged reading of "Southern Exposure", by Valerie Kavanaugh. The auditions will be held in Pittsfield at 27 Alexander Terrace. Sides from the play will be  provided for the auditions. Needed for the cast are three women, one approximately 45 and two in their 60's. The play is about three friends who go out to celebrate a birthday and what a time they have. The playwright is directing the reading.

Grandmother Spider is an original composition by Berkshire Music School composer-in-residence Alice Spatz. The text is based on a delightful and suspenseful Cherokee creation story about the origin of light. This piece is intended for children and families, and combines narration of the traditional story with original modern music that incorporates quotations from fiddle, Plains Indian, Western swing, and classical music with a unique, accessible amalgam that enhances the drama of the story.

Saturday: Metropolitan Live in HD presents Tchaikovsky's Iolanta /Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle at the Beacon

 

On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard's Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.

This year's nominees for Best Animated Short Film: Live Action will screen at the Little Cinema. Aya: ayoung woman waiting at an airport has an unexpected encounter with an arriving passenger.Boogaloo and Graham: Jamesy and Malachy are presented with two baby chicks to raise by their soft-hearted father. Butter Lamp: a photographer and his assistant photograph the inhabitants of a remote Tibetan village. Parvaneh: an Afghan teenager living in a refugee center in Switzerland encounters difficulties wiring money to her family and asks a young Swiss woman for help. The Phone Callwoman working for a crisis center phone line receives a call from a suicidal older man.

Saturday: BerkshireFlirt Valentine's Day Singles Mixer and Fifty Shades of Grey Reading at Thistle & Mirth

 

BerkshireFlirt's kick-off event will be an all-singles mixer: a casual, non-thematic socializing opportunity for anyone romantically unattached. Sunday: "Moving to Glory: A Gospel and Spirituals Concert at First Baptist Church

 

The First Baptist Church of Pittsfield and Berkshire Lyric are teaming up to present this concert with proceeds directly benefitting programs of the Pittsfield Youth Commission. Pastor Sheila Sholes-Ross of First Baptist is the co-director of this important outreach. Wanda Houston will be the featured guest artist, singing selections on her own as well as with the choruses. The 90-voice Berkshire Lyric Chorus will be joined by their own Blafield Children's Chorus as well as the Berkshire Lyric Chamber Chorus. The select 22-voice a cappella chamber chorus is making its debut at this concert. The concert will be led by Berkshire Lyric's Artistic Director Jack Brown and accompanied by Joe Rose. Tuesday: Animals Up Close: The Wolf at Berkshire Museum

 

Berkshire Museum will once again welcome the Wolf Conservation Center of South Salem, N.Y., and their 12-year-old Arctic Gray Wolf, Atka. The program will include an awe-inspiring, up-close encounter with this important but misunderstood predator. Guests will learn about the history of wolves in the United States and the importance of wolves in a healthy ecosystem.

10x10 Event: Tuesday: Music by Ten at Berkshire Music School

 

The Berkshire Music School is offering a concert of TEN musical acts, ranging from students to professional faculty members, classical to cabaret.  Each act will range between two minutes and ten minutes, depending upon the level of performer, and may be one or two pieces.

Please join for networking and lively conversation on all things "green". Pittsfield Green Drinks is a very informal gathering, open to everyone with any environmental interest. Join Spot the Dog, his dad Sam, and his friend Helen on a new adventure! Great fun for young theatre-goers and their parents, Going to the Farm With Spot takes the audience on an interactive journey to Sam's farm where all the animals are lost. Spot and Helen need the audience's help to find his lost animal friends by identifying the sounds of the animals to bring them back safely to the farm.

Wednesday: Community Ash Wednesday Service at Zion Lutheran Church

 

Five churches from four different denominations will mark Ash Wednesday with an ecumenical worship service Zion Lutheran Church. The worship service will include the imposition of ashes and communion and will feature Zion's Jazz Trio: Marisa Massery, vocals; Andy Wrba, string bass; Darby Wolf, piano; and Colin Jalbert, drums. Clergy from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, South Congregational Church, First Church of Christ Congregational, First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield, and Zion Lutheran Church collaborated to create this service and it includes elements from each denomination's liturgical tradition. The service will also include jazz versions of familiar hymns and songs.

Dalton Planning Board OKs Gravel Company Permit

DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board approved the renewal of Nichols Sand and Gravel's special permit for earth removal. 
 
The company, located at 190 Cleveland Road, operates a gravel pit there. 
 
The hours of operation will remain 7 to 4 p.m. The commission approved owner Paul Nichols' request to allow trucks to depart the property in either direction. 
 
Nichols has to apply for renewal of the special permit every year. The previous permit required the truck to exit the property to the right.
 
It makes more sense to go left if truck drivers have to go to the Pittsfield area, Nichols said. He has talked to the residents in the area and they are agreeable to the change. 
 
Former residents requested this stipulation nearly 16 years ago to reduce the number of trucks using the residential street to avoid disturbing the quality of life and neighborhood. 
 
There weren't any residents present during the meeting who expressed concerns regarding this change.
