MCLA Softball Sweeps, Men's Tennis Wins

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The MCLA softball team swept the visiting team Mass. Maritime Buccaneers with a pair of shutouts Saturday afternoon at the Williams College complex.
 
The Trailblazers have bumped their record to 9-15 and are now 6-2 in conference. The Buccaneers dropped to 2-10 in their season and are 0-10 in conference.
 
Amanda Meczywor earned both shutouts in today's doubleheader. She stayed confident on the mound only letting up one hit in the first game and had five strikeouts the second game.
 
Abigail Lucas started off the Trailblazers runs with a single that brought home Michaela DiNicola. From there the Trailblazers continued their lead adding six more runs including a home run by Seirra Baily that brought in three runs. MCLA brought in another run in the second and in the third. The final score was MCLA 8-0 in five innings.
 
In the second game, both teams went scoreless until the second when Juliana Watson singled and brought in two runs. Errors by the Buccaneers ended up costing them two more runs in the inning, putting the Trailblazers ahead 4-0. The Trailblazers went on to score three more runs in the sixth to pull ahead for a final score of 7-0. 
 
Dinicola went 2-for-2 in the first game while Angelica Perfido went 2-for-2 in the second game.
 
The Trailblazers are back in action Monday as they travel to Bridgewater State to take on the Bears. 
 
MEN'S TENNIS TENNIS
STOWE, Vt.- The MCLA men's tennis team won its second straight match by defeating NAC foe Lyndon State, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Trailblazers improve to 4-5 on the season and sit at 2-3 in the NAC with a huge match looming with Thomas on Sunday. Lyndon State drops to 1-9 overall and just 1-4 in league play.
 
For the second straight match, MCLA swept through doubles to jump to an early 3-0 lead. Aaron Goldsmith and Rob Wabshinak combined to handle John Corey and Trevor Updike 8-2 in the top slot.
 
Taylor Krowitz and Michael Rooney won a hard fought match 8-6 over the Hornet duo of Mike Sigsbury and Tyler Hall. Jeff Mason and Tyler Russell cruised to an 8-2 win in the third doubles match.
 
Goldsmith handled Corey 6-2, 6-4 in the top singles slot to earn his second point of the day. Wabshinak disposed of Updike in straight sets in the two hole, while Krowitz did the same in the third slot.  
 
The Hornets took the final three singles matches, however MCLA took home the victory.
 
The win sets up a pivotal match on Sunday at Thomas as MCLA is vying for a playoff berth as are the Terriers.  
 
BASEBALL
NORTH ADAMS, Masss. - The MCLA baseball team was swept in a critical double header by the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime on Saturday at the Joe Zavattaro complex. 
 
Maritime starters Kevin Kwedor and Daniel Avery kept the MCLA bats at bay most of the afternoon as Maritime won Game One, 5-3, and Game Two by a 3-1 margin.
 
North Adams native Chase Preite had three hits in Game One and a pair of hits in the nightcap.
 
MCLA travels to Bridgewater State on Monday for a Patriots Day double-header starting at 1 p.m.
 
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State's Stephanie Lenhardt scored two goals and added eight assists to lead the Owls to an 18-2 women's lacrosse win over MCLA on Saturday.
 
Nataley Caney scored and set up Rebecca Pike's goal for the Trailblazers (3-7, 0-5 MASCAC).
 
First-place Westfield improved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the league.
 
MCLA hosts Southern Vermont Monday.
