GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Seven local teens spent their April vacation exploring their futures at the 2015 Health Care Exploration Camp at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington.
Programming during the week included CPR/first aid training, two shadow experiences daily, and an afternoon presentation or hands-on experience with a clinical provider. The students were exposed to many areas of the hospital, including the pharmacy, emergency, cardiac rehab, med-surg, lab, CCU, maternity, respiratory therapy, radiology and operating room to get glimpse of the many roles and functions played in a hospital environment.
To participate in the program, students were required to submit an essay about why the student was interested in the hospital experience. The students responses centered on a desire to make a difference and most students also had a personal experience with healthcare which made them want to give back.
In a small graduation to mark the end of the weeklong mini-medical program, Vice President Doreen Hutchinson told the students that the staff enjoyed sharing their work with them.
"The work we do in a hospital is important. It’s more than a job - it’s a commitment to our community. You are the future of care in our community," she said.
