MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Williamstown men's tennis team defeated second-ranked Amherst, 5-2, on Saturday in the NESCAC semi-finals.
Williamstown's Rohan Shastri earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles for the Ephs, who play Middlebury on Sunday for the league title.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Having received a first round bye in the NESCAC tournament as the top seed, the Williams women's tennis team (19-0) opened the postseason on Saturday against Bowdoin (13-5), and the Ephs prevailed, 5-1.
On the final weekend of regular season play the Ephs edged Bowdoin 5-4 at home, despite trailing 2-1 after doubles.
On Saturday, the Ephs played better in doubles. Senior Maria Pylypiv and freshman Julia Cancio fell to Bowdoin's Likhansaia/Cheng, 8-3, however, the Ephs' number two doubles team of Linda Shin and Juli Raventos followed with a strong performance, winning the match 9-8(4). Maya Hart and Rebecca Curran kept the momentum going with an 8-5 victory, taking the Ephs into singles up 2-1
Williams plays Amherst on Sunday for the conference title.
SOFTBALL
MEDFORD, Mass. — Senior Emma Harrington became the all-time winningest pitcher in Williams College history Saturday, hurling the Ephs into the 2015 NESCAC Tournament championship round via a 6-3 elimination-game win over Middlebury.
Williams improved to 30-6 with the win after losing earlier in the day to host Tufts University, 5-0. Tufts (40-0) will play Williams Sunday at 10 a.m. needing one win to claim the NESCAC title, while the Ephs will need to defeat the Jumbos twice.
Harrington went the distance in the win over Middlebury, allowing five hits and three runs, while walking no one and striking out six. The victory was the 50th of her career, breaking a tie with Katherine Baldwin '03, who finished with 49.
