These chairs by Julie Morgan celebrate New England's sports teams. This year's Chair Auction to benefit the Adams Youth Center is letting artists express themselves with other types of furniture.

ADAMS, Mass. — This year the Youth Center's Chair Auction will expand and include different kinds of furniture and an artist walk down Park Street, where the chairs will be displayed.

Executive Director Youth Center Sonia DiSanti said the Youth Center has teamed up with Pro Adams to create a fundraising event that envelops the community even more than years prior.

"It involves the community. People donate these chairs and then artists, from the community, decorate them, paint them, or whatever their talent is," DiSanti said. "It involves the whole community and now it will be even bigger."

DiSanti said they are allowing other kinds of furniture this year to expand what artists can work with and people can donate. She said people can expect to see tables, night stands, and even dressers. These will be displayed in storefronts along Park Street, which she hopes will help spread the word of the Oct. 18 auction and liven up the main street.

"Chairs will be at different stores through Park Street up and down, and they will each have a little something about the artist," she said. "Some will have stories about those who painted the chair or why the artist did the chair the way they did ...  plus we are in Adams so anything we can do to help."

DiSanti said the walk will take place Sept. 16 and the auction on Oct. 18. New this year, people will be allowed to take part in the auction online.

This is the Youth Center's biggest fundraising effort and usually brings in between $10,000 and $12,000 yearly. DiSanti said the event usually gets between 50 and 60 chairs a year but this one is expected to be much bigger because many artists already are asking if they can submit more than one piece.

People can sign up to donate or paint a chair by contacting the Youth Center at 413-743-3550 or sonia@youthcenterinc.org. Businesses can also sponsor a chair or take an ad out in the chair auction program.

All chairs need to be finished by the Artist's Reception on Sept. 12. The reception will be held at the old Simmons Furniture building, which is to become a gallery.

Greylock Glen Outdoor Center 90% Complete

By Tammy DanielsiBerkshires Staff
ADAMS, Mass. — The Greylock Glen Outdoor Center is about 90 percent finished with an anticipated completion date in August.

Matthew Sturz of owner's project manager Colliers International updated the Selectmen on the project's progress via Zoom on Wednesday.

"We'll work with the town to determine exactly the logistics of that," he said in response to questions about the opening. "I think that there's certainly interest in getting the facility open as soon as it can open. But we do need to conclude the construction activities ... it's not federally advisable to have construction activity going on with the public."

The completion will depend on getting a certificate of occupancy for the 10,000-square foot facility.

The  $8.3 million project is running eight months behind the expected schedule, Sturz said, largely because of permitting with the state Department of Environmental Protection that required an extensive environmental review of endangered species, working with National Grid to determine how solar will be integrated into the project, and the need for a water system for both potable water and fire suppression.

"Transformers and all manner of electrical switchgear is being significantly impacted by supply chain issues throughout the construction industry," said Sturz. "So coordinating those items up front took a little bit longer than anticipated."

A 350,000-gallon water tank is being constructed on the grounds to provide water with completion expected by July or August.
