The Classical Beat: Tanglewood Hits Its Stride; Marlboro Music Upcoming

Tanglewood enters its second week of diverse programming, with stimulating concerts in the Shed and in Ozawa Hall. As always, there’s music to suit every taste: from solo song to stunning orchestral display favorites, and from opera in concert to heartfelt chamber music. Jazz enthusiasts will also have a very special night to call their own.
Why go? Simply because the amazing range of great music can, and should, be enjoyed by all music lovers. Here are this week’s listings.
• Thursday July 9, 8 p.m. in Ozawa Hall: The fabulous Metropolitan Opera bass-baritone Bryn Terfel presents an evening of art songs and ballads. Mr. Terfel will announce his program from the stage.
• Friday, July 10, 8 p.m. in the Shed: The Boston Symphony Orchestra, led my maestro Stephane Deneve, with guest artist organist Cameron Carpenter, presents a program of Samuel Barber (the beloved, tragic ‘Adagio for Strings’,) Francis Poulenc (the Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani) and Camille Saint-Saens’ stirring Symphony No. 3 (‘Organ Symphony’).
• Saturday, July 11, 8:30 p.m. in the Shed: The BSO, led by conductor Bramwell Tovey, and with guest artists Sondra Radvanovsky, soprano, Gwyn Hughes Jones, tenor, Bryn Terfel, baritone, John Del Carlo, bass-baritone, Ryan Speedo Green, bass, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, present a concert performance of Act I of Puccini’s “Tosca.”
• Sunday, July 12, 10 a.m. in Ozawa Hall: A Tanglewood Music Center Chamber Music concert, featuring TMC instrumental Fellows performing both familiar and contemporary music by Mozart (the powerful String Quintet in G Minor,) Neikrug, Draper, Debussy (the haunting Sonata for flute, viola and harp) and Bach (Cantata No. 155, “Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange”).
• Sunday, July 12, 2:30 p.m. in the Shed: Maestro Ludovic Morlot, joined by the exceptional violinist/violist Pinchas Zuckerman, leads the BSO in a concert of works by 2014 Pulitzer-Prize winning composer John Luther Adams (“The Light That Fills the World”,) Mozart (the Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major, K. 216) and Dvorak (the surging Symphony No. 7 in D Minor).
• Monday, July 13, 8 p.m. in Ozawa Hall: Maestro Morlot and two Tanglewood Music Center Conducting Fellows lead the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in a program of Wagner (the Prelude to the music drama ‘Parsifal’,) Paul Hindemith (Konzertmusik for Strings and Brass, featuring BSO Principal Hornist James Sommerville,) Osvaldo Golijov (a new work for horn and strings, commissioned by the TMC,) and Debussy’s magical and rhapsodic “Images.”
• Tuesday, July 14, 8 p.m. in Ozawa Hall: Wynton Marsalis, the legendary jazz trumpeter, brings his wonderful 15-piece ‘Jazz at Lincoln Center’ orchestra to Tanglewood for a concert of thrilling music spanning the 100-year spectrum of American jazz music. Jazz aficionados, this is your night; it’ll be a performance that’s not to be missed!

Marlboro Music: Chamber Music Heaven
Just a little over an hour from North Adams is Marlboro Music. Located near Brattleboro, Vt., a bit further afield, Marlboro is nevertheless too important a musical destination to ignore; the venue presents the finest in chamber music in the region, and is a necessary stop along the "via musica" for classical music pilgrims.
Located on the campus of tiny Marlboro College, the Music Festival and School offers weekend programs from mid-July to late August. Students are young professional concert artists, symphony orchestra members, chamber music artists, and exceptionally gifted conservatory or university students, and are taught by internationally renowned chamber musicians.
Programs are only announced a day or two before each concert, but this is incidental to Marlboro aficionados; they come to revel in the music, whatever is offered - it’s that good.
Weekend concerts run from July 18-Aug. 16. Tickets are $15-37.50. On Friday, Aug. 14, tickets will be 25 percent off with the code FRIDAY25. Marlboro also offers free open rehearsals.
