POWNAL, Vt. — Dr. Robert Tarnas has joined the SVMC Pownal Campus, a new family medicine practice to serve patients in Southwestern Vermont and the Northern Berkshires.

Tarnas has been a member of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center staff since 1985 and a member of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Physicians since its inception in 2012. He worked at the SVMC Deerfield Valley Campus in Wilmington starting in 1997 and was the leader of the medical team at SVMC ExpressCare since it opened in February 2015.

Tarnas will join Michael Welther, MD, whose appointment to the SVMC Pownal Campus team was announced in June.

“Dr. Tarnas’s experience in family medicine and his long history as a member of the SVMC staff will be an asset to the new SVMC Pownal Campus. He and Dr. Welther will make great use of this patient-centered space to meet the primary care need in this area,” said Trey Dobson, MD, the medical director of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Medical Group and SVMC’s chief medical officer.

Tarnas received his education at Oakland University and his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, both in Michigan. He completed his residency in family practice at Oakwood Hospital in Michigan and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

“SVMC Pownal Campus is here to provide high-quality primary care close to where patients live,” said Tarnas. “I am excited about the opportunity to serve the community.”

SVMC Pownal Campus will be located less than one mile north of the Vermont-Massachusetts border. The 5,000-square-foot medical practice will include 10 exam rooms and offer X-ray and visit-related lab testing. Providers will have access to electronic medical records and be able to integrate directly with SVMC resources. In addition, the space offers many features designed for patient comfort, including a covered drop-off entrance, a pleasant waiting area, and plenty of natural light.

The practice and Dr. Tarnas will be accepting patients. For information about becoming a patient at the new SVMC Pownal Campus, call 802-681-2780 or visit the Patient Portal at www.myhealth.svhealthcare.org.
