BOSTON, Mass. — Erwin Figueroa, a residential supervisor at Berkshire County Arc, received the Supervisor of the Year Award during the 40th Annual Massachusetts Council of Human Service Providers' Convention and Expo at the Marriott Copley Hotel in Boston on Monday.

The Convention is the largest human services conference in New England, with more than 1,000 in attendance.

Figueroa, who has been with Berkshire County Arc for 16 years, was born in Guatemala. During his childhood, he lived on a coffee farm in the village of Isnul. The eldest of seven brothers and two sisters, he moved out of his home at age 14 to attend seventh grade and continued his schooling while working for room and board.

Upon completing high school, he received a two-year scholarship to Berkshire Community College, received his associate’s degree and returned to Guatemala for two years. In 1994, Figueroa returned to the United States to continue his education, at which time he began his employment with Berkshire County Arc.  Over the next few years, Erwin received his American citizenship and his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Figueroa has held many positions at Berkshire County Arc over the years and is currently one of the agency’s residential supervisors, overseeing a caseload of six residential programs.

“I may have left my family at home, but I gained a larger family at Berkshire County Arc. The experiences I’ve had here have shaped me into a better human being,” Figueroa said of the honor.

“The entire agency congratulates Erwin as a very deserving recipient of this award,” said Berkshire County Arc President and CEO Kenneth W. Singer.
