David Gürçay-Morris, associate professor of theater, will present the opening lecture in Williams College’s annual Faculty Lecture Series in Wege Auditorium, with a reception to follow in Schow Atrium. The lecture is free and open to the public. Gürçay-Morris’ presentation, titled “The Garden of F_ _king Paths: Choice and Chance in Performance,” is a one-man performance about a fictional professor named David Gürçay-Morris who, when faced with giving a public lecture, overcomes his glossophobia by asking his audience to make meaningful choices for him about the mode and content of his presentation. The performance could cover such disparate subjects as: the social conventions of communal food consumption when placed in conflict with behavioral norms at entertainment functions; the parallel evolutions of video game tutorials and the role of the audience in post-Brechtian theater; and an analysis of the inverted scenographies of prison panopticons, summer vacation slideshows, and artist’s retrospectives.

His Decades Project is a series of 24 concerts exploring 24 decades of popular song in America. Mac, who has a sweet, powerful voice and the bantering chops of a veteran drag performer, transforms into a bedazzled creature in perform-ance to lead audiences into a decidedly personal history of music, ideas, and ways of being. For this performance at Williams, Mac will focus on the 1770s, 1780s, and 1790s.
