The Miss Hall’s School Theater Ensemble will present 'Nice Work if You Can Get It.'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Miss Hall’s School Theater Ensemble will showcase the songs of George and Ira Gershwin, performing the musical comedy "Nice Work if You Can Get It" in shows at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, and Saturday, Feb. 20, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.

Set on Long Island in the “Roaring Twenties,” "Nice Work if You Can Get It" brings the Gershwin songbook to life, as recently married playboy Jimmy Winter finds himself tangled up with a trio of bootleggers, including one who steals his heart. With the law sniffing around, romance in the air, and prohibitionists in the house, there are plenty of madcap happenings in this lively musical.

The show, with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin and a book by Joe DiPietro, opened in April 2012 on Broadway and ran for nearly 500 performances before closing in June 2013. It won two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards.

The production stars seniors Jackie Blair as Jimmy Winter and Desiré Garza as the feisty bootlegger Billie Bendix, with freshwoman Ainsley Schuth and junior Maya Finston-Fox of Monterey as Billie’s cohorts, Cookie McGee and Duke Mahoney. Junior Josie Dorsey plays Eileen Evergreen, Jimmy’s fiancé, while junior Christina Zhang, as Senator Max Evergreen, and senior Amelia Biancolo of Richmond as Chief Berry, pursue the bootleggers.

Performers also include sophomore Michela Laurin of Pittsfield as Estonia Dulworth; sophomore Olivia Kinne of Pittsfield as Jeannie Muldoon; and senior Alyssa Dion of Pittsfield as Millicent Winter and in the ensemble. The ensemble also features senior Katrina Baumgarten; sophomore Madison Bellemare, of Hoosick Falls; N.Y.; junior Artemis Fraine; freshwoman Ingrid Jensen O’Dell; sophomore Judy Li; junior Jackie Rich of North Adams; and sophomore Erica Zhang in the roles of the vice squad, chorus girls, and others.

The MHS performances will take place in the Woods Theater of the Elizabeth Gatchell Klein Arts Center on the Miss Hall’s campus. General admission is $6, and reservations are recommended. Senior citizen and handicapped-accessible seating is available. Please call 413-395-7108 for tickets and reservations or email boconnor@misshalls.org.

Toy Library Installed at Onota Lake

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Feel free to use or leave a toy at Onota Lake's newest infrastructure meant to foster community and benefit kids.

Burbank Park now has a toy library thanks to Wahconah Regional High School senior Alexandra Bills. Located along the wall at the beach area, the green and blue structure features two shelves with sand toys that can be used to enhance children's visits.

The Parks Commission supported Bills' proposal in February as part of her National Honors Society individual service project and it was installed this month. Measuring about 4 feet wide and 5.8 feet tall, it was built by the student and her father with donated materials from a local lumber company.

Friends and family members provided toys to fill the library such as pails, shovels, Frisbees, and trucks.

"I wanted to create a toy library like the other examples in Berkshire County from the sled library to the book libraries," she told the commission in February.

"But I wanted to make it toys for Onota Lake because a lot of kids forget their toys or some kids can't afford toys."

Bills lives nearby and will check on the library weekly — if not daily — to ensure the operation is running smoothly.  A sign reading "Borrow-Play-Return" asks community members to clean up after themselves after using the toys.

It was built to accommodate children's heights and will be stored during the winter season.
