Mill City Productions Selling Off Props to Fund New Home
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — If all the world's a stage, then Mill City Productions may have the props you need for your personal play.
The local stage company is holding a tag sale this weekend to sell off extra props to fund its eventual move to a new theater space.
Company member Marissa Carlson said the fundraiser, which will be held Saturday from 9 to 1, is a new venture for MCP because it is the first time there has been enough extra items to sell.
"We spent the first five years of our existence without a permanent theater, so we couldn't really store costumes or set pieces in between shows," Carlson said. "However, now that we've been in our current space at Heritage State Park for almost eight years, we have gathered a lot of items — many of which are in great shape."
She said people can expect to find both modern and vintage clothing as well as shoes for kids and adults. Also, housewares such as vases, dishes, paintings and even some furniture.
She added that various kinds of fabric the company has accrued over the years will be for sale and even a few items beyond classification — such as an antique shoe shine kit.
Proceeds from the tag sale will go toward the costs of moving to and setting up a new theater space. The group currently calls Building 4N at Western Gateway Heritage State Park its home but is leaving because of proposed development in the park.
"The city of North Adams has been generous in their terms with the space since we moved in in 2008, but we've always known that our stay here has been conditional," Carlson said. "We are holding this sale to become more flexible and portable again.
Carlson said the company does not have a definite new location yet, but is actively looking.
The group chose keep items it may need in the future or that have sentimental value to the company.
"We decided not to part with a standing cut-out of Charlie Brown from the first musical we ever produced 2005's 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown’, or the fox costume worn in 2008's ‘The Little Prince’ by one of our founding members who has since passed away," she said. "But hopefully the things we are selling are more appealing and useful to the average consumer."
Carlson hopes these loved items find great new homes and thanked the community for their generosity and support that allowed them to put on low cost shows for the community for 12 years.
"Selling these great-condition items for low cost back to community members to help us move forward as an organization is hopefully a win for everyone involved," Carlson said. "We're looking forward too many more years of bringing you theatre and family programming in the Northern Berkshires - we love being a part of this community."
