St. Stan's Students Win Battle of the Books

ADAMS, Mass. — Students in grades five and six from St. Stanislaus Kostka School won first place in their division in the fourth annual Springfield Diocese Battle of the Books competition, held Tuesday, May 10, at Mater Dolorosa School in Holyoke.

Battle of the Books is a national reading incentive program held annually in many schools across the United States. Students read books and come together to test their knowledge in a competitive elimination style contest much like "Family Feud" or "Whiz Kid."

This year’s team of students, fifth-graders Rachael Barrows, Jacob Touponce, Brenna Wojcik and Jonathan Lewis, along with sixth-grader Abby Bird, competed against 22 teams in their division from eight schools, beating out Saint Mary’s Academy from Longmeadow in the finals. They answered questions about authors, titles, characters and events, correctly responding to all but two questions in the preliminary rounds.

In addition to winning their division, they scored the highest number of points of all teams from grades three through eight.

To prepare for the event, the St. Stan’s team spent seven months reading from a list of 24 books. Coached by their principal, Linda Reardon, they met during recess and after school to practice for the showdown.

This is the second time in four years that a team from St. Stanislaus has won first place.
