Bay State Games Girls Basketball Tryouts Set

WESTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Tryouts for the Bay State Games Western Massachusetts girls basketball team will begin on Thursday, May 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hampshire Regional High School.
 
The tryouts will be held over four dates, which include one at North Adams’ McCann Tech on Wednesday, June 22, from 6 to 8 p.m.
 
Interested players must participate in at least one tryout to be considered for the team, which will compete at the Bay State Games July 15-17 at the Reggie Lewis Center in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury Crossing.
 
The team is open to all girls in ninth through 12th grades (2016 graduates welcome) who either live in Massachusetts or attend a Massachusetts school.
 
The cost to try out is $27 before June 1 or $37 afterward. The finalist fee is $50.
 
Potential players are encouraged to attend as many tryouts as possible, but at least one tryout is required in order to be considered for the team.
 
The four tryout dates are:
 
Thursday, May 26, 6 to 8 p.m., Hampshire Regional, Westhampton.
 
Sunday, June 5, 6 to 8 p.m., Pioneer Valley Regional, Northfield.
 
Tuesday, June 21, 9 to 11 a.m., Smith Vocational, Northampton.
 
Wednesday, June 22, 6 to 8 p.m., McCann Tech, North Adams.

Dalton Select Board Argues Over Sidewalk Article

DALTON, Mass. — A heated discussion concerning sidewalks during Monday night's Select Board meeting resulted in the acting chair calling a recess to cool the situation. 
 
The debate stemmed from the two articles on the town meeting warrant for May 6 at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Regional High School. 
 
One proposes purchasing a sidewalk paver for $64,000 so sidewalks can be paved or repaired for less money, but they will use asphalt rather than concrete. The other would amend the town's bylaws to mandate the use of concrete for all future sidewalks. 
 
The article on concrete sidewalks was added to the warrant through a citizen petition led by resident Todd Logan. 
 
The board was determining whether to recommend the article when member John Boyle took the conversation in a new direction by addressing how the petition was brought about. 
 
"I just have a comment about this whole procedure. I'm very disappointed in the fact that you [Logan] have been working, lobbying various groups and implementing this plan and filed this petition six weeks ago. You never had any respect for the Select Board and …" Boyle said. 
 
Before Boyle could finish his statement, which was directed to Logan, who was in the audience, Chair Joe Diver called point of order via Zoom.
